Living with a dog who can’t be left alone isn’t just inconvenient — it’s emotionally and physically draining.
For many owners, it means skipping plans, living in fear of destruction or noise complaints, and feeling isolated because “people just don’t get it.”
This blog is for you — if you’ve ever:
Timed your supermarket dash like a military op
Sat through work worrying if your dog is okay
Been told to “just let them cry it out”
You're not alone. And there’s help.
Not Every Home-Alone Problem is Separation Anxiety
Many behaviours that happen when you’re out — barking, chewing, pacing — aren’t always caused by true separation anxiety.
Sometimes it’s boredom. Other times it’s frustration or lack of stimulation. But when it is separation-related, the signs often start before you leave.
Tip: Pay attention to your dog’s body language as you go through your leaving routine. Are they already showing signs of stress before the door even closes?
Why Common Advice Often Makes Things Worse
It’s natural to try anything when you're desperate.
Leaving the TV on. Getting a second dog. Crate training. Sneaking out. “Tough love.”
Unfortunately, these well-meaning efforts don’t get to the root of the problem: panic.
If your dog’s response is driven by fear, we need to teach them that alone-time is safe — gradually, at their pace, with a structured desensitisation plan.
You’re Not Failing – This Is Hard
Many of my clients come to me saying they feel like they’ve “tried everything” and still feel stuck.
The truth is: if your dog has separation-related behaviours, it’s not your fault. You haven’t failed — you just haven’t had the right support yet.
With the right plan (and patience), dogs can learn to feel safe alone.
